Stefanos Tsitsipas made a strong start to the season, reaching the Australian Open semi-final after beating Rafael Nadal from two sets to love down! The Greek lost to Daniil Medvedev and failed to advance into the first Major final for the second tournament in a row, following the semi-final run at Roland Garros last October. The Greek played a great match against Novak Djokovic in Paris, winning only five games in the opening two sets (just like against Rafa in Melbourne) before saving a match point in the third and performing a marvelous comeback to force a decider. Struggling with injury, Stefanos didn’t have much left in the tank in the final set, losing it 6-1 and sending Djokovic into the title clash. After that Melbourne Park campaign, Tsitsipas is back in action in Rotterdam, beating Egor Gerasimov 7-6, 7-5 in the opening round in just under two hours.
Stefanos Tsitsipas said great things about Novak Djokovic.
Speaking about the legends, Stefanos called Roger Federer his childhood idol and mentioned Novak Djokovic as another incredible player of our generation. Praising the Serb, Tsitsipas said that Novak has accomplished extraordinary things in the last ten years or so, improving his game regularly and always finding a way to increase his level. Novak and Roger have achieved a lot, and Stefanos is confident that the young guns can repeat at least some of that in the future, with so many great youngsters already cracking the top-20 and chasing notable titles.
“Federer has done incredible things in tennis. Not that Djokovic hasn’t done it, but for me, Federer has always been an idol I grew up with. The things Djokovic has accomplished in the last seven or eight years are unthinkable. It has raised its level so much; every year, it seems to get better. All I can say is a big thumbs up. I think the new generation could do something similar in the future. I do not think anyone 15 years ago expected Federer to surpass the Sampras record. It is difficult to predict what will happen. We as a new generation have many players capable of achieving big things,” Stefanos Tsitsipas said.
