Clara Tauson shocks Alexandrova in Lyon

“I wasn’t expecting actually to win here after the first round but I kept working hard…” Denmark’s Clara Tauson smilingly said upon winning the 2019 Australian Open’s Girls’ title. She is known to be a Futures and Challenger level player having accumulated 8 ITF Singles titles. But Tauson’s resume is slowly building as her talent and definance to play a dominant game over opponents is paying off in an alarming way. It’s her appearance at the Lyon Open that is causing a stir as she defeated no. 33 Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the first round.

Clara Tauson turned pro only 4 years ago later winning the Girls’ singles 2017 European Youth Olympics. In April of 2019 she joined the WTA Tour feeling the urge to continue on her path to being a professional. She entered the 2019 Australian Open in the Girls’ singles category and won the title. Previously she’d played for Fed Cup fo Denmark and won ITF Singles titles. But now this is playing the professional level with stronger competitors. It was last season that she participated in the French Open under stressful Pandemic conditions. She went on to defeat Jennifer Brady ranked no. 13 at the opener of Roland Garros. It was the Danish youngster’s  debut at a Grand Slam and she outshined Brady in three sets. “It’s kind of an insane feeling. I didn’t expect it going into the match. It was a dream come true…Just happy I could play a girl like her on a big court…” Clara’s eyes widened with excitement.

Little did she know that she’d win another opener here at Lyon, France.

Clara Tauson is to be observed for creating suspense, dominance and strategies on the court to defeat. She feels there is nothing to lose and has been sharpening her skills with Futures and Challenger tournaments for years now. Tauson had just finished up an ITF event in Germany where she won over Simona Waltert for the title in three sets before coming to Lyon. As she had great experience at the French Open and now in Lyon she’s commented with a smile that “I feel like I have the game to be here right now…” The young Danish said. But she isn’t finished yet. She’s just beginning to shwo everyone the skills she has possessed for a long time.

Being the youngest at a tournament might have nothing to do with Clara Tausonand#039;s spirit to try and defeat any opponent no matter their ranking.
