Novak Djokovic got close to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the slam race, winning his 9th Australian Open. The Serbian champion at Melbourne Park on Sunday beat Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 to dominate the match in 1 hour and 54 minutes of play. Today he has a 5 to 3 advantage in the ATP Head2Head against the Russian. Novak is the second male player to win 9 or more titles in the same Grand Slam event, equaling Rafael Nadal who set this record at Roland Garros. But the Djoker has also approached (with 18 victories), in the race to conquer the highest number of slams, the Spanish player and the Swiss Roger Federer, both at 20 slams. Roger Federer’s long-time fitness trainer Pierre Paganini recently provided some updates about the Swiss star’s recovery process. Paganini highlighted the fact that Federer’s muscles have become weaker with age, but lavished special praise for the 39-year-old’s perseverance.
Paganini comments on Roger Federer
According to Pierre Paganini, Roger Federer’s right knee had been bothering him for a long time but was largely ‘under control’. “The right knee had been causing him problems for several years,” Paganini said. “But he had them under control, with adapted planning and specific exercises.” Paganini added that Federer was currently working hard to regain his speed – the base of his world-class footwork. “In the strength area back to where it was before the injury,” Paganini said. “He actually trains almost normally. If you were to watch you would say: he is not hurt, everything is fine. There is absolutely nothing to hide here,” he added. “We are working hard on his speed because we know very well that this will be an important point.” Roger Federer will soon return to the tennis court after 13 months. His return is already hyped up a lot and many can’t wait until 8th March when he makes his return in Doha. Such an anticipated comeback deserves a special look and thus Federer’s sponsors, Uniqlo are teasing a fresh look for Federer when he returns. Federer will make his return in an ATP 250 event in Doha, Qatar. Federer’s last tournament was the 2020 Australian Open. Since then, the pandemic and his two knee surgeries have pushed him out of the tennis court. Many wanted the Swiss master to return at Australian Open 2021, but a delayed recovery phase prompted Federer to delay his return.
